Sheriff advises on Snow Emergency Levels

DARKE COUNTY – Sheriff Toby Spencer reminds everyone of the Snow Emergency Levels and asks for cooperation with abiding by the levels should any of the levels be needed.

Levels 1 and 2 DO NOT restrict the use of the roadways; they are strictly warning to you and the travelling public stating that hazardous conditions exist.

Level 3 is a restrictive level. Should conditions be bad enough that Emergency Workers and Public Safety Workers are unable to perform their work a Level 3 is issued. Everyone should stay off the roads and allow the emergency crews to open up the roadways, restore utilities and provide fire and medical services to those that need it.

Level 1: Snow Advisory – Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads are also icy. Drive very cautiously.

Level 2: Snow Advisory – Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be out on the roadways. Contact your employer to see if you should report to work.

Level 3: Snow Emergency – ALL ROADWAYS are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be out during these conditions unless it is necessary to travel. All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report to work. Those traveling on the roadways may subject themselves to arrest.

Level 3: Modified Snow Emergency – If it is determined that certain parts of the county (e.g. cities, villages, state routes, etc) are exempt from the Level 3, that exemption will be so stated in the announcement.
