The eleventh of twelve children, he grew up in Bay Village, a suburb of Cleveland. He received both his undergraduate and law degrees from Ohio State University, where he served two terms as president of the Undergraduate Student Government. He is currently an attorney in the Columbus office of Porter, Wright, Morris, and Arthur where he counsels clients on a variety of issues focusing on those related to health care.
Carney has spent more than a decade working with doctors on the business side of providing health care services. Since almost half of Ohio tax money is spent on health care costs, it makes sense to elect an auditor with expertise in the field. Other areas of particular interest to him are economic development programs like the Third Frontier, and legislation which made Ohio business laws flexible relative to other states. He has also supported measures to limit state college tuition increases.
In the Ohio House, Carney serves on the Finance and Appropriations committees and is theis the senior Democratic member of the Insurance Committee. The vast majority of Rep Carney’s bills have had both Republican and Democratic sponsors. He is a pragmatic legislator who will be fair as Ohio Auditor. However, his bi-partisan approach hasn’t stopped him from being an aggressive critic of Gov. Kasich’s Jobs Ohio program, a private corporation which he has criticized for working in secret and without sufficient oversight. Carney believes that governmental transparency is important so that Ohioans know how their hard earned tax dollars are being used.
Carney’s wife, Jennifer Nelson Carney is also an attorney and they are the parents of two daughters, Clara and Maggie.
