Benefit planned for Sidney man and family

SIDNEY – A benefit is being held Nov. 9 for Jason Felker. Felker, a Sidney resident, suffers Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is believed to be an autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system (CNS)—the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. The nerves in the CNS are surrounded by a protective fatty material called myelin, which helps nerve fibers conduct electrical impulses. In MS, it is believed when the immune system attacks the CNS, the myelin is damaged–resulting in the formation of dense, scar-like tissue called sclerosis. These scars (also known as lesions) occur in multiple places throughout the CNS.

The scar tissue affects the way electrical impulses travel along the nerve fiber, distorting and interrupting signals coming to and from the brain and spinal cord. This produces the various symptoms of MS.

Jason was diagnosed in June 2010 with MS and according his wife, Michele, their lives have been changed forever.

A typical day in their house is hearing alarms for 15 different medications, telling their eight year old daughter that it’s not a good day for daddy to play, fitting in physical and occupational therapy twice a day, and trying to squeeze in some house cleaning or laundry before. Michele said, “Our daughter and I do the best we can to take care of daddy but its often overwhelming and time consuming although very worth it, I believe it has made our daughter grow up very quickly, she is always there to help, fill in for me when I have to work and never complains.” She continued, “Even though it’s my husband that has MS I would say that it is a family disease because it takes all three of us to work together and fight against this debilitating disease to accomplish anything.” Jason receives disability, but because of his condition Michele is only able to work part-time. Funds raised will help the family and pay for medical expenses.

The benefit will be held Nov. 9, beginning at noon, at the Phoenix Nightclub. Eight performers will donate their time for this event. Food will be provided by Dunaway’s Beef & Ale of Troy. Guest speakers from various support groups will be speaking throughout the event to raise awareness of Multiple Sclerosis. Performers include TCupp & Mary, noon; Larry Lyons, 1:30 p.m.; Noah Back, 3 p.m.; Mark Cantwil, 4:30 p.m.; The Greendeville’s, 6 p.m.; Frohna & Warner, 7:30 p.m.; Moblues, 9 p.m.; and Tonal Caravan, 10:30 p.m. The cost is a donation of $5 at the door.
