Early Bird, CNO, Ackley and Bistro will help local youth

GREENVILLE – Celebrated local artist Paul Ackley is once again offering a special showing and sale of his cartoons. The event is being hosted by Bistro Off Broadway and sponsored by Darke County’s local media, The Early Bird and County News Online. It will begin at 5:30 p.m. on May 31.

Visitors will be able to purchase Ackley’s original art, signed by the artist, that has been published in the past several months in the Early Bird and on County News Online.

The proceeds of the sale will be donated to the Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund to be used for scholarships for Darke County teens going to college.

A graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Paul Ackley has been an active Editorial Cartoonist for over thirty years. In 2009 and 2010, he was awarded ''Best Editorial Cartoonist'' by the Ohio Associated Press.

In 2010, he received the Good Citizen Award for his Editorial Cartoons from the Ohio House of Representatives. Ackley also has a drawing displayed in House Speaker John Boehner's Washington D.C. office. He is a proud tribal member of the Sokaogon Chippewa Community of Northern Wisconsin.

The Early Bird, under the leadership of Publisher Fred Foutz, is joining County News Online to help meet the needs of local youth heading to college.

“College is an expensive endeavor for kids today,” said CNO Editor Bob Robinson. “We have had an unprecedented number of students asking for assistance, both through the Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund and a local fraternal organization for which I’m secretary, Greenville Eagles 2177.”

“They either have to get assistance from grants, local businesses, organizations and individuals or they graduate already saddled with thousands of dollars of debt. Today is a far cry from when most of us were privileged to get a college education,” Robinson added.

The Early Bird is a long-recognized weekly newspaper serving all residents of Darke County. Established in 1968, The Early Bird was purchased in June 2012 by Fred and Keith Foutz of Brothers Publishing Company.

Since 2009, the Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund has awarded nearly $24,000 in scholarships to Darke County students. County News Online, a fundraising arm of SSSF, has provided more than $13,000 of that amount since its inception in 2011.

According to Robinson, this will be the first time two local media sources have partnered to help local youth achieve their college goals.

Ted and Diana Abney, owners of Bistro Off Broadway, have long supported community events and services. This premier restaurant at 117 E. Fifth Street is the Banner supporter of County News Online, providing the initial support CNO needed to begin publication. 2013 is the second year Bistro Off Broadway has been a CNO “Business Sponsor” with a special emphasis toward young people in the 4H program.

Ackley, Greenville’s local celebrity cartoonist, has been the focal point of community service and activities for nearly as long as he has been drawing. A life-long resident, Ackley also has a desire to help deserving Darke County youth achieve their goals.

Check out your favorite cartoons from past issues of The Early Bird and postings of County News Online and bring your checkbook to The Bistro Off Broadway on May 31, beginning at 5:30 p.m. In addition to getting a signed Ackley original, your generosity will help a local teen achieve his or her college goals.
