GREENVILLE--Have you ever seen a bird with a colored “bracelet” on its leg or heard of someone “banding” a bird and wondered why someone would do that? The Darke County Park District welcomes Dr. Dave Russell, of the Avian Research and Education Institute, to the Nature Center on Feb. 9, 9 a.m. and discover how and why scientists use this popular technique. The Avian Research and Education Institute (AREI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the preservation of avian populations. AREI is committed to establishing biological stations that will provide bird banding and environmental education to the public. After an informative lecture, everyone will head to the bird banding station to watch as Dr. Russell bands local songbirds. Space is limited, pre-register early by calling the Nature Center, 548-0165. The fee for this program is $2.
