AFG grant bolsters firefighter safety

GREENVILLE – The City of Greenville Fire Department joined with Senator Sherrod Brown in announcing the department received an award of $26,101 from the 2012 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program was established in 2001 and is awarded for operations and safety by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency Assistance to Firefighters Grants program. This is the sixth AFG grant the department has received for a total of $1,031,917. The 2012 grant application was prepared by Lt. Russell Thompson.

According to Chief Mark Wolf, the grant was awarded to purchase firefighting protective clothing and training. Both items have not been funded in the last two years due to budget shortfalls in the City of Greenville General Fund. This grant award will get the department back on track with these two important items.
